Ampay National Sanctuary, located in the Apurímac region of Peru, is a protected area renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. Established in 1987, the sanctuary spans approximately 3,635 hectares and is characterized by its diverse ecosystems, including montane forests, high Andean grasslands, and glacial lakes. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region. One of the sanctuary's most notable features is the snow-capped peak of Mount Ampay, which stands at 5,235 meters and offers breathtaking views. The area is also important for the conservation of native tree species such as the intimpa (Podocarpus glomeratus).
