Believed to have been built in the 7th century by the Kalinga dynasty, the temple is an architectural marvel featuring intricate carvings and sculptures. The temple is particularly famous for its unique design, which allows the rays of the sun to directly fall on the feet of the deity twice a year, during the early hours of the day.
