About

Ashton Villa in Galveston, Texas, is a historic mansion that stands as a significant example of Victorian Italianate architecture. Built in 1859 by James Moreau Brown, a wealthy businessman, it was one of the first brick structures in Texas. The mansion is renowned for its elaborate cast-iron balconies, ornate interior, and lush gardens. Ashton Villa played a pivotal role in Texas history; it is famously known as the site where General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, effectively announcing the emancipation of slaves in Texas, an event commemorated annually as Juneteenth.
