Founded in the 13th century, it became one of Europe's most significant mining centers during the Middle Ages, particularly for silver and gold. The town's unique character is highlighted by its picturesque streets, baroque buildings, and notable landmarks such as the Holy Trinity Square, the Old Castle, and the New Castle. Banská Štiavnica is also home to the historic Mining Academy, the first technical university in the world, established in 1762.
