Bennett Place, located in Durham, North Carolina, is a significant historic site where the largest surrender of Confederate soldiers took place, effectively marking the end of the American Civil War. On April 26, 1865, General Joseph E. Johnston of the Confederate Army and Major General William T. Sherman of the Union Army met at the farm owned by James and Nancy Bennett to negotiate terms of surrender. This event involved nearly 90,000 soldiers across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida.
