Biosphere 2 is a scientific research facility located in Oracle, Arizona, USA. Constructed between 1987 and 1991, it was originally designed to explore the interactions within ecosystems and to serve as a closed ecological system. The facility encompasses 3.14 acres and houses various biomes, including rainforest, ocean with coral reef, mangrove wetlands, savannah grassland, and fog desert. Initially, it was the site of two missions in the early 1990s where researchers lived inside to study survivability and ecological interactions.
