Built by the Ayyubid ruler Salah al-Din (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 to protect the city from Crusaders, the citadel has served as a seat of government and a military barracks throughout its history. It is one of the most iconic landmarks in Cairo, featuring impressive structures such as the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, and the 14th-century Mosque of an-Nasir Muhammad.
