Capelinhos is a volcanic site located on the western coast of Faial Island in the Azores, near the town of Horta, Portugal. It is the result of a volcanic eruption that began in September 1957 and lasted until October 1958, significantly altering the landscape. The eruption created a new landmass and buried the old Capelinhos lighthouse in ash and volcanic debris. Today, the site is a popular tourist attraction, featuring the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, which provides educational exhibits about the eruption, volcanic activity, and the natural history of the Azores.
