Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida, is a historic fortress built by the Spanish in the late 17th century. Constructed from coquina, a type of limestone composed of shell fragments, the fort was designed to protect the Spanish colony from pirate attacks and foreign invasions. Completed in 1695, it is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The Castillo has withstood numerous sieges and has changed hands multiple times, reflecting the complex colonial history of the region.
