Coventry Cathedral
Coventry Cathedral, also known as St Michael's Cathedral, is a renowned landmark in Coventry, United Kingdom. The cathedral is notable for its modernist architecture and its poignant history. The original St Michael's Cathedral, a 14th-century Gothic structure, was largely destroyed during a Luftwaffe bombing raid in World War II on November 14, 1940. Rather than being rebuilt, the ruins of the old cathedral were preserved as a memorial to peace and reconciliation. Adjacent to the ruins, a new cathedral was constructed and consecrated in 1962. Designed by architect Sir Basil Spence, the new Coventry Cathedral is celebrated for its innovative design and striking features, including a large tapestry by Graham Sutherland, a stunning stained glass window by John Piper, and the iconic "St Michael's Victory over the Devil" sculpture by Jacob Epstein.
