Originally built in the 16th century, it was part of a Franciscan monastery complex and is one of the oldest cathedrals in the country. The cathedral features a mix of architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements, reflecting various periods of construction and renovation. Notably, the cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the "Earliest 16th-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatépetl.
