Cyrene

Cyrene in Shahhat, Libya, is an ancient Greek and Roman city that was founded around 631 BC by settlers from the Greek island of Thera. It became one of the principal cities in the Hellenic world and was renowned for its intellectual and cultural contributions. The site includes impressive ruins such as the Temple of Zeus, which is larger than the Parthenon in Athens, the Temple of Apollo, and a large necropolis. Cyrene was also a center of learning, particularly in philosophy and medicine, and it produced several notable figures, including the philosopher Aristippus, who founded the Cyrenaic school of philosophy.
