The name "Dimmuborgir" translates to "dark castles" or "dark cities," aptly describing the towering lava pillars and labyrinthine structures that resemble ancient ruins or fortresses. Formed approximately 2,300 years ago during a volcanic eruption, Dimmuborgir's striking landscape has inspired numerous legends and folklore, including tales of elves and trolls residing among the rocks.
