Fort Charles is a historic fort located in Port Royal, Jamaica, originally constructed in the mid-17th century by the English after they captured the island from the Spanish. Named after King Charles II, the fort played a crucial role in the defense of the bustling and notoriously pirate-infested port town of Port Royal, once dubbed "the wickedest city on Earth." The fort has endured numerous natural disasters, including the catastrophic earthquake of 1692 that submerged much of Port Royal.
