Fort de Joux, located in La Cluse-et-Mijoux, France, is a historic fortress with a rich and varied history. Originally constructed in the 11th century, the fort has undergone numerous modifications and expansions over the centuries, reflecting the architectural and military advancements of each era. It served as a strategic military stronghold due to its commanding position overlooking the Joux Valley and the routes connecting France to Switzerland. The fort is also notable for being a prison, famously housing Toussaint Louverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution, during his final days.
