Fort Douaumont, located in Fleury-devant-Douaumont, France, is a significant historical site, primarily known for its role in the Battle of Verdun during World War I. Constructed in the late 19th century as part of the Séré de Rivières system of fortifications, it was considered one of the most formidable forts in France. Despite its strength, the fort was captured by German forces in a surprise attack in February 1916, becoming a crucial strategic point. The fort saw intense combat and heavy bombardment throughout the battle.
