Fort Massachusetts is a historic fort located on West Ship Island in Mississippi. Constructed in the mid-19th century, it served as a strategic coastal defense installation during the American Civil War. The fort played a significant role in protecting the Gulf Coast and controlling access to the Mississippi Sound. Despite its military purpose, Fort Massachusetts never saw extensive combat. Today, it is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and is a popular destination for visitors interested in history, coastal scenery, and wildlife.
