Fort McHenry, located in Baltimore, Maryland, is a historic American coastal fort best known for its role in the War of 1812. During the Battle of Baltimore in September 1814, the fort successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy. This event inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner," which later became the national anthem of the United States.
