Fossanova Abbey, located in Priverno, Italy, is a prime example of early Gothic architecture in Italy. Founded in the 12th century, the abbey was originally a Benedictine monastery before being taken over by Cistercian monks. Its austere and harmonious design reflects the Cistercian ideals of simplicity and functionality. The abbey complex includes a church, cloister, chapter house, and refectory, all built with local stone. Fossanova is historically significant as the place where Saint Thomas Aquinas passed away in 1274.
