The Great Mosque of Aleppo, also known as the Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo, is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the city of Aleppo, Syria. It is renowned for its historical significance and architectural beauty. The mosque was originally constructed in the early 8th century by the Umayyad Caliphate, but much of its current form dates to later periods, particularly during the 11th and 12th centuries under the Seljuk and Zengid dynasties. The mosque features a large courtyard surrounded by arcades, an impressive prayer hall, and a distinctive minaret, which was a notable landmark until it was unfortunately destroyed during the Syrian Civil War in 2013. The Great Mosque of Aleppo has been a center for Islamic worship and community activities for centuries and stands as an important symbol of Aleppo's rich cultural and religious heritage.
