Nestled against the backdrop of the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the park spans over 149,000 acres and features a diverse range of ecosystems, from high alpine forests and tundra to wetlands and grasslands. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities including sandboarding, hiking, and stargazing, as well as exploring the Medano Creek, which flows seasonally at the base of the dunes.
