Hagios Demetrios, also known as the Church of Saint Demetrios, is a prominent and historic church located in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is dedicated to Saint Demetrios, the patron saint of the city. The church was originally established in the 4th century on the site of an ancient Roman bath where Saint Demetrios was believed to have been martyred. Over the centuries, it has undergone various reconstructions, particularly after being destroyed by fire in 1917 and subsequently rebuilt in the 1920s. Hagios Demetrios is renowned for its impressive Byzantine architecture, featuring a basilica layout with five aisles and a transept. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful mosaics, frescoes, and other religious artifacts, some dating back to the early Byzantine period. The crypt beneath the church, which was part of the original Roman bath complex, is also open to the public and adds an intriguing historical dimension to the site.
