Hersfeld Abbey, located in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, is a former Benedictine monastery with a rich history dating back to its founding in 769 AD by Saint Lullus, an early archbishop of Mainz. The abbey became an influential center of learning and culture during the Middle Ages and played a significant role in the Christianization of the region. Despite suffering damage during the Thirty Years' War and being secularized in 1606, its impressive Romanesque and Gothic architectural remains, including the ruins of the colossal abbey church, continue to attract visitors.
