It served as the royal residence for the Hawaiian monarchy, specifically for King Kalākaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliʻuokalani. Built in 1882, the palace is an architectural marvel, blending European influences with Hawaiian craftsmanship. It is the only royal palace on U.S. soil and was equipped with many modern amenities of its time, such as electricity and indoor plumbing.
