The Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Nouméa, New Caledonia, is a striking architectural landmark designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano. Opened in 1998, the centre is named after Jean-Marie Tjibaou, a prominent Kanak leader and advocate for indigenous rights. The design of the centre harmoniously blends traditional Kanak architectural elements with modern techniques, featuring ten soaring, hut-like structures made of wood and steel that echo the shape of traditional Kanak homes. The centre serves as a cultural hub, showcasing Kanak art, history, and traditions, and includes exhibition spaces, performance areas, and a library.
