Lake Amatitlán

Lake Amatitlán is a picturesque body of water located in the central highlands of Guatemala, approximately 26 kilometers south of the capital, Guatemala City. The lake spans an area of about 15.2 square kilometers and sits at an elevation of 1,188 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by volcanic mountains, making it a scenic destination for both locals and tourists. The town of Amatitlán, located on the lake's northeastern shore, is known for its hot springs and traditional cultural events. However, Lake Amatitlán faces significant environmental challenges, including pollution from industrial and residential waste, which has led to efforts aimed at its restoration and preservation.
