Lake Atitlán, located in the Guatemalan Highlands near the town of Panajachel, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and cultural richness. Surrounded by three majestic volcanoes—Volcán Atitlán, Volcán Tolimán, and Volcán San Pedro—the lake's picturesque setting attracts travelers from around the world. Formed by a massive volcanic eruption approximately 84,000 years ago, Lake Atitlán is one of the deepest lakes in Central America, with depths reaching up to 340 meters (1,120 feet). The area is also home to vibrant indigenous communities, primarily of the Tz'utujil and Kaqchikel Maya, who maintain traditional lifestyles and crafts.
