The Machado de Castro National Museum, located in Coimbra, Portugal, is one of the most important art museums in the country. Housed in a former episcopal palace, the museum is named after Joaquim Machado de Castro, a renowned Portuguese sculptor. It showcases an extensive collection of religious art, including sculptures, paintings, and metalwork from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period. One of the museum's highlights is the Roman cryptoporticus, an underground gallery dating back to the 1st century, which offers a glimpse into the ancient history of Coimbra.
