Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Incan citadel located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru on a mountain ridge 2,430 meters (7,970 ft) above sea level. Often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas," it is renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone construction that fuses huge blocks without the use of mortar. The site includes more than 150 buildings ranging from baths and houses to temples and sanctuaries, all interconnected by a series of intricate terraces. Discovered by American historian Hiram Bingham in 1911, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, drawing millions of tourists annually.
