With a history dating back over a millennium, its construction began in 975 under the direction of Archbishop Willigis. The cathedral is an impressive example of Romanesque architecture, though it also features Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance elements due to various periods of reconstruction and restoration. Notably, Mainz Cathedral has served as the coronation site for numerous German kings and has been a central figure in the religious and cultural life of the region.
