The Panama Canal is a man-made waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. It is a key conduit for international maritime trade, allowing ships to avoid the lengthy and hazardous route around the southern tip of South America via the Drake Passage or the Strait of Magellan. Completed in 1914, the canal spans approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) and features a series of locks that lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to aid the crossing, and then lower them back down to sea level.
