The Parthenon in Athens, Greece, is a former temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Constructed between 447 and 432 BCE during the height of the Athenian Empire, the Parthenon is an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and Athenian democracy. It is renowned for its Doric architecture, though it incorporates elements of the Ionic order, and is celebrated for its intricate sculptures and friezes, including the famous Parthenon Marbles. Originally used as a treasury, the Parthenon has also served various roles throughout history, including as a Christian church and a Muslim mosque.
