Peyrepertuse is a stunning medieval castle located in the Aude department of southern France. Perched dramatically on a limestone ridge in the Corbières mountains, it is one of the so-called "Five Sons of Carcassonne," a series of fortresses that once guarded the border between France and Spain. The castle's origins date back to the 11th century, and it played a significant role during the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars. Peyrepertuse is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, which include two main sections connected by a remarkable staircase carved into the rock.
