Robben Island is a small island located in Table Bay, about 7 kilometers off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. Historically, it is most renowned for being the site where former South African President Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in captivity during the apartheid era. The island has served various purposes over the centuries, including as a leper colony and a military base. Today, Robben Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination, offering guided tours that provide insights into its complex history and significance in the struggle against apartheid.
