Salers is a picturesque commune located in the Cantal department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-central France. Renowned for its beautifully preserved medieval architecture, Salers is classified as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France). The village is famous for its traditional black volcanic stone houses with distinctive slate roofs, as well as its historical buildings such as the 16th-century Maison des Templiers and the Romanesque church of Saint-Mathieu. Salers is also celebrated for its culinary heritage, particularly its namesake cheese, Salers, which is a traditional cow's milk cheese with a robust and nutty flavor. The region around Salers is known for its lush pastures and cattle breeding, which contribute to the production of this notable cheese.
