Often referred to as the "Kailasa of the South," it is one of the most important Shaivite pilgrimage sites in South India. The temple is famous for its Vayu Linga, one of the Panchabhoota Sthalams, representing the element of air. Architecturally, the temple boasts impressive Dravidian style, with intricate carvings and sculptures that date back to the 5th century. The temple is also associated with the legend of Kannappa, a tribal devotee of Shiva, who is said to have offered his eyes to the deity.
