Tikal National Park in Guatemala is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the ruins of one of the largest and most significant ancient Maya cities. Located in the dense jungles of the Petén Basin, the park covers an area of approximately 575 square kilometers (222 square miles). Tikal was a major cultural and political center during the Maya Classic Period (200-900 AD) and features impressive architectural structures, including towering pyramids, temples, and palaces. The park is also home to a rich biodiversity, with numerous species of flora and fauna, making it a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
