The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, located in Weston, West Virginia, is a historic psychiatric hospital that opened its doors in 1864. Designed by architect Richard Andrews, the asylum is built in the Kirkbride Plan, which was a popular 19th-century design for mental health facilities aimed at promoting healing through architecture. The facility, originally intended to house 250 patients, eventually became overcrowded, with peak numbers exceeding 2,400, leading to deteriorating conditions. It officially closed in 1994.
