The Vajont Dam, located near the town of Erto e Casso in Italy, is an engineering structure with a tragic history. Completed in 1960, the dam stands 262 meters tall and was one of the tallest dams in the world at the time. It was built to generate hydroelectric power by creating a reservoir in the Vajont Valley. However, on October 9, 1963, a massive landslide from Monte Toc fell into the reservoir, causing a wave of water to overtop the dam. This resulted in a catastrophic flood that devastated the downstream villages, including Longarone, and led to the loss of around 2,000 lives.
