Valkenburg Castle, located in Valkenburg aan de Geul in the Netherlands, is a historic ruin that dates back to the 12th century. It is the only castle in the Netherlands built on a hill, providing a strategic vantage point over the surrounding area. The castle has a tumultuous history, having been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Its final destruction occurred in 1672 by the French troops under King Louis XIV to prevent it from being used by opposing forces. Today, the ruins are a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into medieval architecture and history, as well as stunning views of the Limburg landscape.
