The Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon, Portugal, is a stunning feat of modern engineering and one of the longest bridges in Europe. Stretching over 17 kilometers (about 10.6 miles), it spans the Tagus River and connects the northern and southern parts of the country. Opened to the public in 1998, the bridge was designed to alleviate congestion on the 25 de Abril Bridge and to accommodate the increased traffic expected for the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition. Its elegant design, featuring cable-stayed sections and sprawling viaducts, not only serves a practical purpose but also stands as an architectural landmark.
