Vat Phou is an ancient Khmer Hindu temple complex located in southern Laos, near the town of Champasak. Constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries, the temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, but later became a center of Theravada Buddhist worship. The site is renowned for its intricate carvings, impressive architecture, and its dramatic setting at the base of Phou Khao mountain. Vat Phou is part of a larger archaeological landscape that was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
