Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, located on the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico, is a sprawling sanctuary that spans over 17,000 acres. Established in 2001, it is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is known for its diverse ecosystems, which include mangroves, coastal lagoons, beaches, and subtropical dry forests. The refuge provides critical habitat for a variety of wildlife, including endangered species such as the West Indian manatee and the Puerto Rican boa. It is also a haven for birdwatchers, offering sightings of species like the brown pelican and the Antillean crested hummingbird.
