Known as the "Ship of the Fens" due to its prominent position rising above the flat surrounding landscape, the cathedral's origins date back to 672 when St. Etheldreda founded an abbey on the site. The present building was started in 1083 by the Normans and expanded over the centuries. One of its most distinctive features is the Octagon Tower, an architectural marvel completed in the 14th century after the original Norman tower collapsed. The tower is topped with a wooden lantern that floods the interior with light. The cathedral also houses a stunning collection of medieval stained glass, intricate woodwork, and a renowned Lady Chapel.
