Mount Karthala is an active shield volcano located on Grande Comore, the largest island of the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Standing at approximately 2,361 meters (7,746 feet) above sea level, it is the highest point in the Comoros. The volcano has a large caldera at its summit, which has been the site of numerous eruptions throughout history, the most recent significant activity occurring in 2005. These eruptions often result in ash clouds and lava flows, posing risks to the local population and affecting the environment.
Moroni is the capital and largest city of the Comoros, an island nation in the Indian Ocean located off the eastern coast of Africa. Situated on the island of Grande Comore (Ngazidja), Moroni serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. The city is known for its historic architecture, including the Old Friday Mosque, and its bustling markets. Moroni also features a picturesque harbor and offers views of Mount Karthala, an active volcano.
