The castle is strategically situated on the banks of the Drimneen River, making it a formidable defensive structure. It features a six-story tower, defensive walls, a banquet hall, and a dry moat. The castle's name, Aughnanure, is derived from the Irish "Achadh na nIúir," meaning "field of yews.
